Metabolic psychiatry

Metabolic psychiatry: connecting physical and mental health

Mental health doesn't exist separately from the body. Metabolic psychiatry pays close attention to how metabolic health, medications and mood influence one another.

What is metabolic psychiatry?

Metabolic psychiatry is a growing area of psychiatric care that recognizes strong, two-way links between metabolic health and mental health. Conditions like insulin resistance, obesity, type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol occur more often in people with depression, bipolar disorder and other psychiatric conditions. Some psychiatric medications can also affect weight, appetite and blood sugar.

How it shapes your care

  • Medication choices that consider metabolic side effects, especially for mood stabilizers and antipsychotic medications
  • Baseline and follow-up monitoring of weight, blood pressure and labs such as glucose, A1c and lipids when appropriate
  • Attention to nutrition, activity and sleep as practical parts of the plan, based on what's realistic for you
  • Coordination with your primary care clinician for medical conditions that affect mental health
  • Adjusting treatment when a medication is helping mood but harming metabolic health

Who may benefit

  • People taking medications known to affect weight or blood sugar
  • People with depression or bipolar disorder alongside prediabetes, diabetes or weight concerns
  • Anyone interested in how nutrition, sleep and activity can support their mental health treatment

An honest note

Research in metabolic psychiatry is active and evolving. Lifestyle and nutrition approaches can support treatment, but they're not a replacement for evidence-based psychiatric care, and specialized approaches (such as therapeutic diets) should only be undertaken with appropriate medical supervision. We'll always be clear about what the evidence does and doesn't show.

Common questions

Is metabolic psychiatry a replacement for medication?

No. It's an approach that considers metabolic health alongside standard psychiatric treatment, which may include medication.

Will I need lab work?

Often, yes. Labs such as glucose, A1c and lipids help guide safer medication choices. Labs are drawn at a local lab convenient to you.

Do you prescribe weight-loss medications?

Our focus is psychiatric care. We coordinate with your primary care clinician for weight management and other medical treatment.
