OCD care

OCD treatment and medication management in Arizona

OCD is more than being tidy or particular. It's exhausting, and it's treatable. We provide psychiatric care that works hand in hand with specialized therapy.

What OCD really is

Obsessive-compulsive disorder involves obsessions (unwanted, distressing thoughts, images or urges) and compulsions (behaviors or mental rituals done to reduce the distress). Common themes include contamination, harm, doubt and checking, symmetry, and intrusive thoughts that feel completely out of character.

Many people with OCD hide their symptoms for years out of embarrassment. Intrusive thoughts are a symptom of the condition. They don't mean anything about who you are.

How we help

The most effective treatment for OCD combines exposure and response prevention (ERP), a specialized form of therapy, with medication when appropriate. Our role is psychiatric evaluation and medication management, and we coordinate closely with ERP-trained therapists.

  • Thorough evaluation, including screening for related conditions like anxiety, depression, tics and ADHD
  • Medication, most often SSRIs, which for OCD sometimes work best at doses higher than those used for depression, adjusted carefully over time
  • Help finding an ERP therapist if you don't already have one
  • Family guidance for children and teens, since families are often pulled into rituals and reassurance

A whole-person approach

At Joy Integrative Psychiatry, the evaluation looks beyond a symptom checklist. We consider stress, sleep, co-occurring conditions and, in children, any sudden onset of symptoms that may warrant medical evaluation, along with sleep, stress, physical health, current medications and what's happening at home, school or work. That fuller picture helps separate the true drivers of symptoms from things that simply look similar, and it leads to a plan that fits your life.

Common questions

Do you provide ERP therapy?

We focus on psychiatric evaluation and medication management and coordinate with ERP therapists. We can help you look for one if needed.

How long does OCD medication take to work?

Improvement in OCD often takes longer than in depression, commonly 8 to 12 weeks at an effective dose. Patience and regular follow-up are part of the plan.

Do you treat OCD in children?

Yes, for children 6 and older, with parents closely involved.
