What to Expect at Your First Psychiatric Appointment

If you've never seen a psychiatric provider before, it's normal to feel a little nervous. Knowing what to expect makes it easier. Here's how a first visit usually goes at Joy Integrative Psychiatry.

Before the visit

  • Intake forms. You'll complete secure forms online covering history, medications and a few questionnaires. Take your time; they make the visit more productive.
  • Your setup. Find a private, quiet space in Arizona, charge your device and test your camera and microphone a few minutes early.
  • Your list. Write down current medications and doses, past psychiatric medications (and what happened), supplements, allergies and any recent lab results.

During the visit (about 60 minutes)

The evaluation is a conversation. Expect questions about:

  • What brings you in, and why now
  • Your symptoms and how they affect daily life
  • Past mental health care, including therapy and medications
  • Medical conditions, sleep, appetite, activity, caffeine, alcohol and other substances
  • Family history of mental health conditions
  • Relationships, work or school, and sources of stress and support
  • Safety. These questions are asked of everyone.

You don't have to have perfect answers. “I'm not sure” is always okay.

If the appointment is for your child

A parent or guardian takes part. We'll usually talk together and separately. Teens get private time, with a clear explanation of confidentiality and its limits. Bring report cards, teacher comments or prior evaluations if you have them.

At the end

You'll hear initial impressions in plain language and talk through a plan together. It may include medication, therapy, lab work, sleep or lifestyle steps, or gathering more information. You'll also schedule a follow-up.

Questions worth asking

  • What do you think is going on, and what else could explain it?
  • What are my treatment options, including non-medication options?
  • If I start medication, what should I notice and when?
  • What side effects should I watch for?
  • How do I reach you between visits?
